One good thing is having contacts all over the place. Contacts who will do what is required, no questions asked. When Tanner was taken to the hospital at the tail end of the war, Dr. Stephens was alerted. Dr. Stephens, in actuality, was a pseudonym used by our illustrious Dr. Destiny. The woman herself took the man's prone body into her care, with a grim satisfaction, preparing to use him to further her own goals.
A few days have passed. Anyone that may have looked for him will not have found him at all. The hospitals don't even have a passing knowledge that he was there, having been wiped from the records…
The current setting is a warehouse. The warehouse is clean, but has been changed on the inside, into a large laboratory. There is a very large tank, filled with a greenish blue stasis liquid and Tanner's body. Dr. Destiny stands at the foot of the tank, behind a large plexiglass shield. As Tanner awakens, the fluid has drained away, and wires are attached to his body. The large tube slides down, as her voice intones, deep and gruff, "You may remove the wiyas. You'll be alright without them." Her voice could easily be confused for a man's… a man who smokes two or three packs a day. It also possesses a deep brooklyn accent. The lights come on, revealing his own area, but not hers. All that's visible at the moment is Tanner's direct vicinity. The stasis tube, his wires, and his naked form. The lights are extremely bright.
Tanner opens his eyes and looks like he might panic for a few moments as the fluid starts to drain away. He lands on his knees as the lack of aid that gravity gives when submerged is taken away. He coughs a few times, sputtering liquid from his lungs. It takes him a few moments of wretching to get it all out. He idly tugs at the wires, not knowing what they are or where they are attached. His vision is still very cloudly. "Who….who are' ye….wha' happened?"
"Suffice to say, I'm a friend. You, Tanner are an oddity. You always have been. The doctors could find no cure for your problems. Your genetics were weak. You were barely able to stay alive most of your life. What would you say, if I said that I've corrected the problems?" Dr. Destiny pauses for effect. "What would you say, if I told you that not only did I correct your deficiencies, but I advanced you beyond humanity?" Her voice seems filled with desire and passion, despite the sheer absurdity of her voice. Another light comes on, and there's a treadmill near where Tanner is. "You've still got your muscle tone. I made sure to keep you from losing any of that while you were in stasis. Go for a run." she says, plainly.
Tanner offers quietly as he lays sort of in a fetal position on his knees. "I'd…ask if ye' have some shorts?" He asks, trying to retain his modesty for whatever is is worth after having been floating in a tube naked for a few days. None the less, he slowly gets up and makes his way over towards the treadmill and keeping his hands over his junk, he places still wet bare feet on the belt itself and waits. "What d'ye mean beyond humanity?"
A figure appears out of the darkness nearby, dressed in black, with a veil over their face. It holds a couple of towels as well as a basic skin suit, much like those from Genosha, only without numbers or skin bonding. "You may dress." She says with a chuckle. "Even though, you must realize, I have seen you in the tank for several days now." She coughs, "But nevermind. I chose you because of your disability. To see if I could correct it. I have. And I've done more, that you will realize shortly." She explains. "How are your hands and feet? Warmer than normal? And your heartbeat seems stronger, from what I can pick up."
Tanner gives a blink and then takes a moment to actually check in with his body. His eyes open and his mouth drops open after a moment. "Yeah…." He says drying of quickly and hurrying into the suit. He then steps up onto the treadmill again. "Yeah….I'm not tired. W…What did ya do? I feel great!" He says giving a laugh.
"I rebuilt your genetics." Dr. Destiny states simply. "Though, world scientists would be horrified by my doing so." She gives a chuckle. "Bound by laws and ethics. They'll never get anywhere that way. Tanner O'Kane. You are the next level of humanity now. You are not a mutant, but you will have gifts. Admittedly, I have no idea what they all are. I know only of one thing, because I saw it in action while you were in the stasis pod." The handholds on the treadmill are registerring his data and sending it to her. "You seem to be perfectly fine, now." She says with a nod as she reads them. "However, you will have to make massive changes to your diet." She says, grinning lightly.
Tanner tilts his head and shrugs a little bit. "Whatever you did…if it wo…." he pauses in saying something and offers. "Gifts? What did you see?" He pauses yet again and turns a bit to face you. "What kinna changes? I can still drink, yeah?"
"You can still drink, yes." The good doctor gives a soft laugh from behind the glass. There's a crack of knuckles behind Tanner. Once he turns to look, the figure in black that gave him clothing and towels rushes in to land a quick punch to the guy's stomach. However, before that can happen, a ridge forms beneath Tanner's skin. Hard, yet flexible. From the guy's punch, Tanner will feel a little bit, but not nearly what it should have been. The hardness begins to flow under his skin, all over, giving him a subdermal armoring. It moves easily as he does. "From what I can see, an armor underneath your skin. However, I don't think I'm getting the entire picture. There may be much more."
Tanner raises a brow and looks down at the ridges and makes a face. "Didn't feel that at all." He laughs a little bit and looks over at you. "So….I'm indestructable?" He asks, hopefully.
"Highly doubtful. I didn't affect your skin. I only altered your heart, your bone marrow, and your teeth. Your abilities have something to do with your blood. Either way, you no longer suffer from your disability. However, you need a greater intake of calcium and iron. Your levels kept dropping in the solution. Your body eats through both at an accelerated rate. However, I think it would be a worthwhile trade… to be able to live like a normal human, simply with a greater intake, wouldn't you?" Dr. Destiny offers, sweetly.
Tanner raises a brow and puts a finger in his mouth to check and see if he has fangs or something. "stho…" He offers with a mouth full. "Thaths it thed?" He pulls his fingers away and runs his hand over the ridges and idly smooths them back out. "A lota burgers and shakes? Wha do I owe, ye? I only had student insurance….I don't think I can pay for this…"
"Don't worry about the cost right now. However, there are a few… little things you can do for me." The dark figure walks away, returning with a small box on a belt. "First, I would like you to wear this monitor. You can take it off while you're sleeping, but I would recommend that you wear it then as well. The monitor is so that I can make sure nothing bad comes of this. I want to be sure that your body stays stable. That you don't… melt in your sleep or something." There's a dark chuckle from that. "And secondly, you may not know any superhumans now. But, you will. Now that you ARE superhuman, you will meet them. I'd like samples of their genetics. Hair. Scales. Skin. Whatever. I don't care how you get it. Your morals are of no concern to me. If you prefer to ask, you may ask. If you prefer to take, then take. Beyond that, I may have jobs that I'll ask your assistance on at a later date. I will not ask you to do anything you do not wish to do."
Tanner blinks a little bit. "That's it? You want me to get ya some hair and skin?" He asks curiously, snorting a bit. "Ok…" He offers as he takes the belt and puts it around him. "Sounds fine to me…where should I bring them? Or should I just put them under my pillow at night?" He asks with a chuckle.
"The box has a mailing address." The Doctor says with a chuckle as a gas begins to flood the room. "I'd recommend you not tell your doctors about the change. They may ask questions." The gas is a sleeping agent that usually acts quickly. "That, and if you really need information, press the button on the indent under the top. It will alert me and I will call you. Have a nice rest. You'll be in your apartment soon."
