History

Elijah "Eli" Bradley is part of a family legacy of heroics that spans 3 generations. His grandfather Ezekiel was the first Captain America, having been the first successful recipient of the Super Soldier Serum. Ezekiel's son inherited the powers from his father and fought in Vietnam. Calling himself Josiah X, he joined the Crew and also became a community leader in New York City, helping the African-American community. Since Elijah was not part of a plot to replicate the powers of Captain America, he was born with no superhuman abilities. He learned of his uncle and grandfather's exploits as heroes, and wanted to follow in his footsteps. When the young Kang sought to recruit three New York-area based young men on the Vision's list of potential Avengers candidates to aid his cause, Eli's uncle, Josiah X, was among them. Josiah, however, had not been in contaact with the family for some time, and when Kang arrived, Eli told him that he had superpowers from a blood transfusion from his grandfather. Kang believed the story and recruited him akong with Billy Kaplan (Wiccan) and Teddy Altman (Hulkling) to form the Young Avengers.

Eli donned a full cowl mas and costume similar to Captain America's sidekick Bucky.On one of their first missions, they botch an attempt to rescue a group of hostages. However, one of the hostages, Kate Bishop, took one of Eli's throwing stars and assisted the group, rescuing herself and Eli. They took an immediate dislike for each other and demonstrated a contentious relationship as she was recruited into their group. It became complex when she gave Eli a triangular shield that the original Captain America used. Subsequently, Eli also saved her life on a later date. They were soon joined by Cassie Lang (Stature), but soon Kang, who called himself Iron Lad, left the group due to temporal displacement. Kate unveiled their headquarters in a rennovated Bishop Publishing warehouse, and the team now had a base of operations. Even after impressing CAptain America and Iron Man, thethey told the young heroes not to pursue crimefighting anymore. In spite of this warning, which included the threats of their parents and guardians being told of their secret identities, they still decided to remain the Young Avengers.

Wiccan discovered that Eli has been taking MGH to give himself powers, after taking a dose, he gets into a fight with Mister Hyde, injecting Hyde with a dose and knocking him unconscious. After being calmed through a spell by Wiccan, he passes out, and is revived in their clubhouse. Eli admits to MGH usage, and quits the team, but returns when Hulkling is attacked by the Super Skrull.

They are soon caught in the middle of a battle between the Kree and Skrulls, alongside the Avengers. Eli saves Captain America and subsequently caught in a crossfire and severely wounded. He is rushed to the hospital, where his grandfather donates blood for Eli's transfusion. He now has the powers of Captain America due to the Super Soldier Serum in Isaiah's blood. The rest of the team and the Avengers show up to check on Eli, and once again the team is on the verge of disbanding, if it wasn't for Kate arguing with Captain America. About a week later, the entire team, including the New Super Soldier Eli showed up at Avengers mansion and repaired the memorial guarden for Teddy's mother's funeral. As soon as they were finished with the funeral, Eli and Vision heard an explosion and Speed showed up. He warned them of an attack on the United nations by the new Zodiac. They rushed off and stomped the new Zodiac into the dirt and saved the UN. After the transfusion, the 2 fights with the aliens and Zodiac and all the tension, Eli decides to spend some time with his grandparents, especially his grandfather, who has become slightly more social and less bitter. He also has spent some time with Josiah and picked up a part time job as an assistant librarian at the local library. When Wiccan and Captain America tell him they're reforming the team, he returns to his costumed identity of Patriot, to carry on the good fight as well as the legacy of his family
