Where did these things come from? I didn't have them the other day!
History
It would have been a standard (U of)American family. Two loving parents, two children, but they aren't in the USA. Jeffrey Tanner and his wife, Melissa had two beautiful children. Leighton and Tannim. Twins. Identical. The brothers were very close growing up, but that's to be expected. Leighton himself was usually the more open of the two with Tannim being the quieter. Leighton always had a slight, thin build for the most part. That isn't to say he didn't have any musculature, just that he remained a little on the smaller side of things. The kids had what they needed, growing up, with Jeffrey being a vet and Melissa a teacher, but they weren't spoiled.
Leigh was well educated and made excellent grades, but the grades didn't come easy. Unlike some, he actually had to study to make them. The twins, for the most part, had the same friends growing up. Up until sixth grade, they even had the same teachers. But, once they made it up to that level, it was decided that the twins might need to separate a little. Being in different classes helped them begin to form their own friends and circles.
Leigh began hanging out more with the intellectuals, the ones wanting to go far in life or to get decent careers. Tan began hanging out with the jocks. Leigh decided, even before entering high school, that since he enjoyed animals, he would follow in his father's footsteps. Because of this, his dad let him come help out at the office from time to time, teaching him a little here and there, because it would be useful for his future.
Unbeknownst to Leigh, his mutation awakened with puberty. But, since his mutation required other mutants around, he never knew it. He couldn't create abilities where there were none. School progressed as normal, moving along at a standard pace until Tan got left behind a year, because he didn't make the grades necessary to pass. Leighton briefly considered holding off, but decided it'd be better to keep moving. Sure, they were close, but their closeness had begun fading over the past few years anyway.
Studying for some early university level classes had Leighton alone in a University Library, minding his own business. The University Library, however, was not the best place to be, as it proved. A wall suddenly crushed into rubble nearby him, sending Leighton into heavy fear. A purple haired woman grabbed him and created a shield of bone around him as he shuddered, asking what was going on. "This isn't the safest place to be" she answered simply.
Hours seemed to pass, but it was only minutes in reality. That was when the first change began. While she was holding him to protect him from what was going on outside, his fear latched onto her body, duplicating her genetics. Slowly, Leigh began to turn pink, and his hair began to turn purple. ALong with that, other physical changes began. Body parts vanished while others appeared. It was not a pleasant feeling. He was too out of it, trying to figure himself out to realize what was going on out there.
Now looking upon… herself… after the fight was over, the woman who saved Leigh asked her if she knew what was going on. Of course, Leigh answered that she didn't have a clue, but couldn't go home like this. Nodding to herself, the woman known as Marrow considered. "Fine. I have a place I can take you. Somewhere that should be able to help you. But… you WILL have to let your parents know eventually, if you do."
In Leigh's mind, this meant turning him back to normal, so of course, he accepted. That is how he ended up at Xavier's doorstep with a note from Marrow which read. "Sorry. I didn't know where else to take him. Her. Whatever. I didn't want to leave a confused child in Department H's hands."

Powers
In essence, Leighton mimics the powers of other people at partial strength. However, there are factors he doesn't understand about them just yet.
