Xavier Mansion - Stables

The smell of horse and hay immediately hit the sense for anyone who step in here. There are empty stalls for students with horses, and school owned horses for those who wish to ride. Tackle, saddles (English and Western), helmets, and grooming supplies are found neatly tucked away in a supply closet.

Classes have ended for the day and for the last twenty minutes Nicholas paced back and forth in the stable, looking down at his cell phone every few seconds. For the umpteenth time he looked over at Orion, “Should I call her?” The horse responded with a blow of breath through his nostrils and bobbing his head. Nick walks over to Orion and kisses him gently on the nose. “We’ll go out in a bit, I promise. I know you’re anxious to run.” He says stroking Orion gently on the neck as he finally makes a decision and presses the ‘call’ button on his phone to dial the number of the girl friend he left behind.

“Hello?”

“Hello Mr. Zimmer, is Kirsten home? This is John, from school.” Nicholas says using the name of one of their classmates and hoping that her father won’t recognize his voice.

“Hold on a moment while I get her.”

In the distance Nick can hear her being called for and after a few moments the voice he recognizes so well answers, sounding confused. “Hello?”

“Hey Kirsten, it’s me. I needed to talk to you…” Nick says as his voice quivers nervously.

“I can’t talk to you, don’t call back here again John.” The female voice says quickly and the phone is disconnected before Nick can say anything more.

After a moment of disbelief Nicholas lets out a scream of frustration as his cell phone flies across the stable and hits the wall, breaking. Not bothering to pick up the pieces at the moment, he turns to Orion and starts trying to focus his attention on getting the horse ready for a ride, trying to keep his mind off of the brief conversation that occurred.

Back in Martin, North Dakota a girl slumps against the wall after hanging up the phone and starts to bawl. Her father rushes over to see what the problem is and in between sobs she explains.

“It was Nick calling and I couldn’t…I had to hang up.” She wipes her eyes but the tears don’t seem to stop.

“At least you know he's okay and safe if he's able to call. Let’s hope they don’t know he called. You know as well as I do they bugged the phones here just in case he did what he just did. By hanging up you’re helping keep him safe.” Mr. Zimmer says as he embraces his crying daughter into a comforting hug.
