Uriko is a shapeshifting mutant with enhanced physical abilities and senses; her alternate forms are all based on the South China subspecies of tiger, and allow her to adapt well to various different situations. She was born in Japan but immigrated to America at a young age, and spent her childhood years mostly in Seattle. Aside from race, she is a rather typical teenager. Well… maybe not…

History

Uriko was born to rather well to do descendents of Japanese immigrants. In fact, she was the only daughter of a rich businessman - that means she got everything she wanted, up until she was thirteen or so. That's when her mutation surfaced.
Right from the start it was a total disaster - things could not have gone worse. Due to her mutation, she began feeling more active at night and more sleepy during the day. Not being something that was within her control, her grades at school began to slip, and she began to have arguments with her parents. For a while, she hid it from them - they didn't know what their precious daughter had become.
Then things got to the level where she could no longer control herself during arguments - she'd often inadvertantly shift in anger and tear up the house. Having money, her dad didn't exactly care - he just paid to have it fixed. Anything to hide it from the neighbors and keep up appearances - the reputation was the most important thing. He came from the traditional school of Japanese culture - what was happening was dishonorable and must be hidden for the family's sake, at any cost. Think of what it would do to his brothers and sisters if someone found out.
So after nearly a year and a half of this (it's amazing he waited that long, really), he felt he had nothing to do but call the authorities. This monster was no longer his daughter, it was something completely different, and he had no compunctions against doing what needed to be done.
Someone, and she's not sure who to this day, tipped Uriko off that this was happening, and she escaped home with little more than the clothes on her back just moments before the authorities showed up at her house.
For a while after that, she was on the run - never staying on one place for very long, until she came to New York, where she lived on the streets for months - before a chance happenstance landed her at Xavier's; she's had many adventures and close calls in the years that she's been there, maturing as a person and in her powers.

Timeline

Lots of things have happened since Uriko arrived in New York; probably too many to count during the several years that she's lived there. After being involved in the horseman attacks that nearly destroyed the city a couple years back, along with being responsible for the deaths of dozens of civilians… she's done her level best to generally stay uninvolved in huge world threatening crisis. These days, she tends to keep a somewhat lower profile, and seems often moody and quick to anger.
