History
Zola's parents are both active career people. Her father, Betrum, is an international businessman who spends most of his time going abroad for his company, pitching sales, giving lectures and making deals. Her mother, Eloise, is a gourmet dessert chef. They both hail from London, though Betrum is dark-skinned and has African ancestry. Soon after they married they began planning for their first child and Eloise even put her job on hold so she could stay home and be a full time mother. When Zola was born, however, it was fairly apparent that she was a Mutant. Her skin was slightly yellowed though that in itself didn't seem unnatural—what really told her parents the truth was the fact that she was born without mammary glands, and after her umbilical cord was cut, her navel eventually sealed perfectly. She also refused to eat, but never lost weight or became hungry.
Her parents weren't rich, but they were wealthy enough to pay off their doctor never to mention their child's mutancy to anyone. They were tolerant, but still fearful of becoming social outcasts, therefore they initially raised Zola not to realize that she was a Mutant. Still, as she developed, it became harder to ignore it. Mainly, she couldn't ignore it because her skin became increasingly greener the older she became. She would also subconsciously spend hours standing out in the garden of their home, doing nothing but basking in the sun and feeling the soil beneath her feet. Soon she discovered that this was in fact how she was "feeding" herself, and through observation of the flowers her mother kept, realized that she had to be part plant.
This was truly confirmed for her when she hit puberty and began emitting a light, flowery fragrance that has been wafting off of her ever since. Zola was taught to hide her odd skin color by applying makeup but still attended school with high hopes for achieving a successful career. She expressed an interest in plant life, which she felt would help her gain self-identity. After High School, she attended the University of Cambridge and earned a doctorate in Botany.
Soon after she went to live on her own. She continued to use the makeup techniques her mother taught her in order to stay concealed, but in her flat she would go without it to feel truly herself. Over the years, she would do light experiments on herself to learn just how much of a plant she was. It was a continuous process which she constantly interrupted to keep up with her public work as a Botanist. During her time in this flat, she discovered another power purely by chance. While working on a manuscript, she heard a light scream and turned to her window to see what was going on. Nothing. She went back to work, but heard more screaming, this time from two voices.
Zola went outside to see what was going on and saw nothing out of the ordinary; however, when she looked across the way, she saw one of her neighbors cutting roses from a bush. Each time the neighbor snipped a rose stem, a little voice would scream and Zola could hear it. This horrified her, but she found when she covered her ears that she couldn't hear it at all. From them on, she discovered that if she listened attentively enough, she could hear voice-like sounds coming from all plant-life, not making words but expressing things that she clearly understood. This prompted her to write a book entitled What Trees Feel, but it was not as well received as she had hoped.
Still, Zola has made a name for herself in the Botanist circle. She played off What Trees Feel as a piece of fiction and went on to write several compelling articles and essays about plants. Her self-research went on hold for the most part, though she did keep an eye out for any sources she could use in the future. The vast amount of Mutant activity in the United States really caught her attention, especially that in New York. Zola decided to make the transition and come to New York in search of more information, using her parents' financial support to move her modest Botanical Wellness business along with her.
Power
Sustainment through photosynthesis - Rather than eat food, Zola gains her nutrition through absorbing sunlight, drinking water and standing in rich soil. Recently she has discovered that she needs to take calcium supplements to help maintain her bones, but other than that, has no other need for food consumption. When standing in dirt, she can will a series of thread-like roots to grow from her ankles and extend into the dirt to speed up the absorption process. Otherwise, she'll simply take nutrients in from the soil through the soles of her feet.
Plant-like external qualities - Zola's skin has a green hue to it caused by the presence of chlorophyll in her skin cells. If she were to go without proper nutrition, that pigment would fade noticeably. Her hair, though also green in color, has the consistency of corn silk. Her body also constantly produces a pleasant, flowery scent that smells like the combination of several flower breeds. If she were to strip naked, one would immediately see that Zola does not have mammary glands or a navel, though she does have a vagina and sphincter.
Plant empathy - Zola can hear the emotional utterances of plants. Words are never spoken but sighs of contentment, cries of pain, and other such noises are within her ability of hearing and understanding.
Secretion and emission - Zola has recently discovered some odd properties about her own body secretions that she is still trying to fully understand. She has found herself able to control her body's ability to sweat, and that this sweat is not the standard mixture for human beings. What she does not know is that her sweat is a dew that naturally strengthens a person's immune system for up to eight hours per concentrated dose, giving them the strength to fight critical illnesses. If her powers were ever enhanced, she might even be able to secrete a mixture that would cure certain terminal illnesses. In addition, she unconsciously absorbs carbon dioxide through her pores and expends oxygen into the atmosphere. Surprisingly, she still needs to breathe oxygen through a standard pair of lungs. The depth of this is unknown to her at this time; all she understands is that she can control whether or not she secretes, and that it is not normal sweat.
Regeneration - Also unknown to her, since she has never had an incident where it was necessary: Zola can regenerate from critical wounds and limb loss by being planted in a fertile environment. Depending on the extent of the damage, it could take a matter of days or weeks. This, of course, does not work if she is suffering from an extensive loss of blood. If she were, say, blown to bits, you couldn't plant those bits and grow another Zola. But if she lost an arm, two weeks of peaceful growing outdoors would bring the arm back.
Immunities and weaknesses - Zola is immune to all plant toxins and human diseases. She is, however, very susceptible to weed and other plant killing agents. If she is not able to spend time in the sun or in contact with soil or water, she will begin to show signs of wilting: her skin will become discolored, her hair will dry out and become brittle, and she will seem to age rapidly. All of this is reversible when conditions are made right again for her.
