Scott had lost his mother, father, and brother in a plane accident. The crash had injured the part of his brain that would have given him control over his optic blasts. After being placed into an orphanage run by the nefarious Mr. Sinister, Professor Charles Xavier had taken him in as his ward. To eventually lead his group of students, The original X-Men, to fulfill his dream of human/mutant co-existence and peace.
Over the years, Scott had fell in love, lost that love, and met many interesting people. the mutant leader originally took the role of Auto-tech and geometry teacher at the school. After the destruction of the mutant nation of Genosha, Charles Xavier had insisted on helping rebuild and fix the lives of people affected by the tragedy.
